Where are We?

Cantwell is on the Parks Highway, Hwy 3, about 4 hours north of Anchorage and 3 hours south of Fairbanks in the interior of Alaska. It is right on the border of Denali National Park, and on a clear day Mt. McKinley is visible from a "hill" in town or on the highway a few miles out of town. Situated in the mountains, snow-covered peaks surround the town in all directions.

Just wanted to give you a visual of where we are living and working, so thought I'd post some pictures of the parsonage/house, church and local view. Three of these pictures were taken during our visit up here in early May, so vegetation is much more green now, but the picture of the sign was just taken two days ago. Rob is listed as the pastor, so it must be official!

A Few More Pictures of our Trip

This beautiful view is near Hope, BC.

Yes, we drove through Hells Gate! This is an airtram in the scenic Fraser Canyon on Hwy 1 in British Columbia.

Riding for 5 long days in the truck got a little tiring... The kids occassionally enjoyed music and stories on the MP3 players.

Vista after vista made us feel as though we were driving through a postcard! This one was taken in Yukon Territory. God's creation declares his majesty at every turn...

Our Trip to Alaska

Our journey began on June 17th, when we packed up the cattle trailer we used to move, weighed the the trailer, determined it was too heavy to drive long distance, unloaded the trailer, weighed every box, removed a few very heavy items, and reloaded the trailer! We ended up leaving the following morning ready to get on the road.

We had clear, blue skies the entire trip except for a total of about 20 minutes of downpour on the fourth day. The Lausen family from Cantwell Bible Church (CBC) sent backpacks for Connor and Samantha filled with fun activities to occupy their time during the drive. This was such a blessing as both children were actually looking forward to the trip!

We saw some wildlife on the second and third days, both in BC. The first was a BIG wolf that ran directly in front of our truck on the highway. Then we saw three individual black bears and one brown grizzly bear within the next 30 minutes! The next day we witnessed a herd of about 20+ bison, 6 mountain sheep, and 5 black birds that looked like the size of a cat! We were able to get a few pictures on the kids' disposable cameras, but haven't had them developed, yet.

Our Australian Kelpie, Cinder, traveled in a bed in the pickup and was so glad to have reached our destination on Wednesday morning at 2:00am. Our intention was to spend Tuesday night in Fairbanks and do a large grocery/misc. shopping trip before driving the three hours south to Canwell on Wednesday, but there were no lodging vacancies in the entire area (due to tourist season!), so we "speed shopped" and drove to our new home the same night. It was a very long day that had started in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory!

We thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Please continue!

Going Away "Party" at SACC

On my last day of work at the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce, Hollis and Connie planned a "small" going away bash for me! We enjoyed refreshments, chocolate cake and cards...

Thanks to all of the well-wishers, staff and members alike, for all of your encouragement and fun over the last 20 months of employment.

Cornerstone Commissioning on 6-13-10

In preparation for accepting the position of pastor for Cantwell Bible Church in Cantwell, Alaska, our family was commissioned by the elders of our home church, Cornerstone, in Gresham, Oregon, on June 13, 2010. Thanks to the elders and Bob Moffat for your wise words and prayers for our family. Also, thanks to all of our friends at Cornerstone for your support of us in this new adventure!

Teacher Ginny holds a special place in the hearts of our children, having taught them in the "Tater Tots" class at church for years.
